THE WORD "DEAF" (WITH A CAPITAL D) IS USED TO DESCRIBE AN INDIVIDUAL WHOSE FIRST OR PREFERRED METHOD OF COMMUNICATION IS BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE (BSL), WHILE THE TERM D/DEAF - NOW WIDELY RECOGNISED BY CARE SERVICE PROFESSIONALS - REFERS TO EVERYONE WITH A HEARING LOSS: DEAF, DEAF, DEAFBLIND, HARD-OF-HEARING AND DEAFBLIND PEOPLE.
