TO ADVANCE THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC IN THE WORKS OF SAMUEL PEPYS AND TO MARK THE TERCENTENARY OF HIS DEATH IN 1703 AND TO COMMEMORATE HIS LIFE BY THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A BIENNIAL AWARD (OR MORE OR LESS FREQUENTLY AS THE TRUSTEES MAY DECIDE) OF A MEDAL AND A SUM OF MONEY FOR A PUBLISHED WORK IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, MAKING THE GREATEST CONTRIBUTION TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF SAMUEL PEPYS, HIS TIMES , OR HIS CONTEMPORARIES, IN THE INTEREST OF ENCOURAGING SCHOLARSHIP IN THIS AREA.
