How Governance Register handles information

From official public registers: the Charity Commission Register of Charities, Companies House officer and ownership records, the Cabinet Office directory of public bodies, and school governance data, plus the national registers used by each country edition. See all sources.

Roles, organisations and dates that come from a register are labelled Official record, with the source. Nobody, including the person themselves, can edit an official record on Governance Register. Corrections go back to the source register.

After claiming their record, a person can add a photo, a short bio, expertise and links. An organisation can add context about itself. Added information is always labelled, for example Added by Sarah Jones, and is never mixed into the official record.

Relationship confirmations ("I know this person"), introduction permissions and organisation participation choices are private by default. A relationship only becomes public if both people agree. An organisation never sees anyone's private relationships.

Registers often hold several records for one person. We only treat records as the same person where the evidence confirms it, such as a matching date of birth. Where records merely share a name, we keep them separate and may say "may be the same person". You can report a wrong match from any profile.

No. "Served alongside" means two people were recorded on the same board at overlapping dates. It does not mean they know each other, and it is not an endorsement. People can privately confirm relationships they actually have.

No. We do not rank or score people by influence, wealth, network size or popularity, and there are no follower counts. Search ranking uses name match, current roles and relevance only.

Every person and organisation page has Report an issue. You can tell us a role or date is wrong, that two records are different people, or that two records are both you. Reports are reviewed; nothing changes automatically.

Signed-in users can remove the information they added from Privacy. Official records remain, because they are public register information.

Filing history is shown as it was published by the register, with dates, so a past role is never shown as current. Removed charities and dissolved companies are clearly labelled.
