Understanding ethnicity data

iPlain-English notes on how to read these figures.

Self-identified ethnicity. Ethnicity in New Zealand school data is self-identified by students and families at enrolment. A student may identify with several groups, so the percentages can add to more than 100%.

Maori students and cultural context. The share of Maori students can reflect a school's engagement with te reo Maori, tikanga and culturally responsive practice.

Diversity is not a quality measure. A school's ethnic composition reflects its community. Schools with a high share of any group serve their students well when they respond to the cultural, linguistic and educational needs of that community.

MELAA and Other. MELAA stands for Middle Eastern, Latin American and African. "Other" includes ethnicities not covered by the main groups and students who did not state one.
