About

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) presents differently for everyone. However, there are some characteristics that are shared by autistic people. Autism is a spectrum and therefore all autistic people have these characteristics to differing degrees, and require different levels of support.

Autism is a developmental condition, which means that it is something that people are born with, although the signs may be noticed at any age. Autistic people can have any level of intelligence, some people have above average intelligence and some autistic people may also have a learning disability.

Autism does not have a known cause, but there is some evidence to suggest it can be passed on through families. It is not caused by bad parenting, vaccines, diet or infection (NHS, 2022). Autistic people often have other conditions, including ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, depression and epilepsy (NHS, 2022).
